During the planning process for a new sanctuary, St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church desired to tie the old facility to the new one as much as was practical.
The plans for the new sanctuary called for a hanging cross; after looking at a number of designs from various sources it was decided that New Holland Church Furniture would be asked to design a new cross.
It was decided that the cross should be made of wood, at which point there arose the question of whether the wood from one of the old pews in the sanctuary could be used to fabricate the new hanging cross. New Holland picked up one of the old pews and quickly determined that there was sufficient wood to construct the cross.
The result, as shown at the top of the page, was the realization of that desire to bring something from the past and convert it into a significant part of the new sanctuary. The results were so pleasing that St. Peter's Church had a new processional cross of the same design, also seen above, made from wood from the same pew.
